Which Projects Need an Electronic Building Permit in Mecklenburg County?
Mecklenburg County requires an online building permit for any new construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, movement to another site, removal or demolition of any building. Permits are also required for the installation, extension, alteration or general repair of electrical, mechanical or plumbing systems.
Permits may not be required for any projects with work costing $15,000 or less, unless the work involves:
- The addition, repair, or replacement of load bearing structures
- The addition or change in the design of a plumbing system
- The addition, replacement or change in the design of a heating or air conditioning system
- The addition, replacement or change in the design of an electrical system
- The use of materials not permitted by the code
- The addition of roofing, excluding replacement of like grade fire resistance material
- Costs in place: including material, labor and equipment
- Overhead, profit and taxes

Video Property Inspections in Mecklenburg County
In order to meet your inspections needs, the Property Inspectors in Mecklenburg County will use Google Duo to perform live video inspections of construction projects. The property inspectors will still send an auto-notification when an inspection will be performed within the upcoming hour.
The inspector will request that you start at a street sign in order to confirm the proper location. From there, the inspector will ask you to move about the work to be inspected.
Once complete, the inspector will terminate the call and inspections results will be entered as normal. All inspections results – pass, fail, partial approval, etc., will have the note added “LIVE REMOTE INSPECTION” through the WebPermit portal.
