WASHINGTON STATE BUILDING PERMITS 

Before any residential or commercial construction project in Washington State is started, it is important that the proper documentation is submitted and approved to receive a building permit. The State of Washington has launched the ePlans, which is an interactive web application that allows residents and businesses to apply for Washington State permits.

The Washington State reviews all the documentation and sends an ePlans that offers permission to begin the construction project.

Who Needs an Online Building Permit in Washington State?

There are a number of reasons that you must apply for an online permit in Washington State, including:

○  All new Single Family structures

○ New Commercial structures

○ All electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and gas work

○ Additions to any structure: sun-rooms, attached and/or detached garages, etc.

○ New storage buildings over 200 sq. ft.

○ Most alterations such as: new roofs, vinyl siding, window replacements, etc.

○ Signs, including temporary event banners

The Electronic Building Permit Process in Washington State 

In order to process all permits electronically, the state has created a process that allows us to leverage existing systems.  In order to make the process work, there are additional steps including needing to apply for a second permit that will allow them to receive your plans electronically.  

Submitting Building ePlans:

You must apply for your building permit through the ePlans system and submit supplemental plans and documents electronically based on your permit type:

  • Demolition (entire structure)
  • New commercial structures, commercial interior alterations, single family dwellings
  • All other permit types

You can use the electronic building plan portal called ProjectDox to submit the following plans:

  • Site Plans 
  • Minor Site Plans 
  • Infill Lot Grading Plans 
  • Public Improvement Plans
  • Subdivision Plans 
  • Conservation Plans
  • Rough Grading Plans
  • Subdivision Grading Plans
