WEST VIRGINIA BUILDING PERMITS

Electronic Building Permits in West Virginia

The State of West Virginia Building, Permitting and Inspections division has made simplifying the permit process a priority for homeowners, contractors and design professionals.

They have done so by replacing the traditional plan review process with an electronic-based plan review system and electronic building permit system called ePlan.

The Electronic Building Application Review Process in West Virginia

Once you have completed the online submission process, the Development Services team will begin their review process. The initial request takes roughly 1 to 3 business days to be pre-screened, at which time the online submission will be checked to see that:

  • The online building application is properly completed
  • All building plans and drawings are in the acceptable format
  • Correct signatures from architects or engineers are included

An incomplete submission will delay the pre-screening of your submittal and increase the review time for your project, causing delays in receiving your electronic building permit in West Virginia.

The Online Building Permit Process in West Virginia

First, you must fill out an online building permit application and present all necessary documents, including electronic plans and drawings through the ePlan portal.

If corrections are required, notification will be sent to the applicant, using the email address provided on the User’s Agreement, outlining the required corrections.

If no corrections are required, the applicant will be notified of a Permit number, the fees due, and a link for online payment of the submittal fees to cover plan review services.

What Information is Available on the West Virginia ePlan System?

The following permit status information can be checked and changed using the online building permit system:

  • Application received date
  • First time plan review summary status reporting total number of reviews required for permit, how many are completed and how many are still pending
  • The most recent resubmittal or revision application receive date
  • The date of the last plan review comment letter
  • Ready to issue permit date
  • Issue date
  • Revision approval date
