TACOMA BUILDING PERMITS 

In a proactive effort to help move Tacoma forward with online building permits, the city has developed a new check and plan permitting system.

Planning and Development Services has launched the online Tacoma Permits system that allows resident and contractor applicants to view and upload documents related to their respective plan check applications.

About the Tacoma Permits Online System

In an effort to streamline this process and improve the customer experience, the City has launched a new Tacoma Permits system. This cloud-based permitting platform includes:

• Citizen Access for online permit applications, payment, and statuses
• Electronic Document Review
• GIS mapping tools for permit status and review
• Mobile Office field tools for inspectors

Now that the system has gone live, all land use, building, and site development permits will be processed through the new system. 

Application forms differ from the traditional building permits in Tacoma and applicants will be required to set up an account, as well as providing the building plans in a specified format.

Who Can Submit an Electronic Building Permit Application in Tacoma?

Any homeowner, architect or a licensed contractor can apply to the City of Tacoma for an ePermit by providing enough information to describe the project fully and clearly.

Construction drawings are necessary on most construction projects and especially for commercial projects, these must be prepared by an architect. For a home improvement project, the homeowner may prepare the drawings, provided that the drawings are accurate, legible and complete.

Submitting Electronic Building Permit Documents in Tacoma

In order for the Tacoma Permits system to be able to review the applications, there are are numerous file requirements that must be followed.

These include:

• The City of Tacoma only accepts PDF files for plan review. No multiple layers. Layers must be merged or flattened.
• 300 pixels per inch (PPI)
• Monochrome (1-bit)
• 1 megabyte (MB) avg. per sheet. 50 MB total
• Multiple-sheet PDF (single file with multiple sheets)
